In June of 2024, the Black Alliance Network became the first affinity group to be officially chartered at Baird & Warner. Founded by Heidi Rogers, assistant manager and broker in the Oak Park office, the Black Alliance began as a means for Black agents within the company to connect with one another and offer mutual mentorship and guidance.
Heidi started by recruiting other top agents to support and mentor newcomers, and the group operated informally for several years before approaching the executive team at Baird & Warner to become a formal affinity group. Steve Baird and his executive team were in full support — thus, the blueprint for affinity groups in the company was then formed.
"There are so many Black agents in the company. We didn't know each other, and we felt that if we could have an organization where we could come together, we could share ideas and get to know one another," said Co-President Angela Pettis of the Orland Park office. "[I]t's basically a networking organization where we can share and learn together." In addition to Angela, the Black Alliance is operated by a board of elected officers, including fellow Co-President Curtis Johnson, Secretary and Treasurer Monique Rolling, Marketing Manager Thomas LeNoir, and Executive Sponsor Heidi Rogers.
Today, the Black Alliance network boasts a wealth of accomplishments and is even working to coach other groups, like the Latino Alliance, into establishing their own charters. More than 100 agents across the company are subscribed to the Black Alliance distribution list, and quarterly meetings consistently draw strong participation.
These quarterly gatherings often feature guest speakers, including Key Mortgage loan officers, attorney partners, home inspectors, and other real estate professionals, offering valuable insights and networking opportunities. In addition to these meetings, the Black Alliance hosts events and makes efforts to recognize important days for Black history throughout the year. In February, they celebrated Black History Month, designing eye-catching and informative assets for members to share across their social media profiles and connect with their audience. And on Juneteenth, members of the Black Alliance gathered together in person to connect, reflect, and discuss ways to answer the call to create a more just and equitable society.
Throughout the organization, agents have also formed mentor and mentee relationships through their accountability and coaching program. "[I]t has helped me be a better agent because it helps me be accountable as well," says Orland Park agent Kem McNair, who acts as mentor to Monique Rolling of the Oak Park/River Forest office.
It's easy to see that, as Baird & Warner's first officially chartered affinity group, the Black Alliance network has set an impressive example for how these groups can enrich the lives of agents, boost their careers, and give back to their communities.
At Baird & Warner, you're empowered to be your best self, and groups like the Black Alliance network are a testament to that commitment. "Their drive to help you succeed is a great motivation for why I picked this company," said Kaponya Bibbs of the Oak Park and River Forest office.
