Minimalist home decor is more than a trend — it's a method of simplifying your space and creating a clean, serene environment for your home. Like the Konmari Method that took the world by storm, minimalist decorating can also be a jumping-off point for self-improvement and more conscious consumption. If you're interested in bringing minimalist design into your space, here are a few tips to help you get started.

Choose a neutral color palette

Shades of white are what first come to mind when envisioning a minimalist color palette, but clean, white decor is not always the most realistic color for every lifestyle — especially one that comes with children and four-legged friends. Instead, consider what colors you gravitate towards the most and adopt a simplified, neutral color palette around those hues. A cool palette of grey and blue or a warm palette incorporating green, beige and brown will look just as stylish as the classic white and black.

Curate large art pieces

Rather than arranging a gallery wall of lots of artwork and photographs, choose one large art piece to function as the centerpiece of your room. You can keep it neutral, or take this as an opportunity to bring some color into the space without it feeling too overwhelming. The same can be done with a large vase or sculpture in place of many smaller accent pieces. It's a great chance to show off your art collection and invoke a chic, gallery-like setting.

Invest in storage solutions

For many of us, simply getting rid of clutter is easier said than done. That's why it's important to invest in stylish, functional storage and organization systems. Consider options like a convertible ottoman or sofa that doubles as storage for extra blankets and pillows or a new organization system for your closets.

Play with texture

If you're sticking to a more conservative color palette, you can still create variety in a minimalist home by incorporating interesting textures in your fabrics. Juxtapoze items like a soft velvet throw blanket, a fuzzy boucle sofa, embroidered pillows or a classic shag rug against smooth, hard textures like a marble coffee table, hardwood floors and metal accents.

Take advantage of natural lighting

One benefit of minimalist decor is that the simple, open floor plans allow for maximum natural light. When designing your space, take into account the amount of natural light you have available and in areas where there is less, try to incorporate warm, natural-looking wall sconces, floor lamps and other light fixtures. Swapping out the existing bulbs in your homes with ones that mimic daylight will show off your space and enhance your environment to be a calm, rejuvenating sanctuary.

No matter what you choose, minimalist design is about learning to embrace the elegance of simplicity. Do so and enjoy the profound impact it can have on your home and your life.
